An Allegory

“Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever flowing stream.” (Prophet Amos)

A wise Sage traveled through many lands to find a certain river. This river was said to have the purest, sweetest water that ran through green lush fields filled with varied colored wildflowers and which looked like a path one should follow between mountains that were anchored into eternity reaching as high as Moses receiving the ten commandments. Waterfalls ran down the mountains feeding into the river constantly providing for the thirsty needs of animals and travelers alike.

She quietly kneeled down at the water's edge scooping her hand in the cool refreshing flowing water to bring to her lips to taste. The clear honeyed water was a delight to her senses bringing deep sighs and remembrances of laughter and love.

She traveled on until the dark smoothness of night fell, wrapping itself around her like unseen safety. She gently lay down on her blanket looking up at the stars which made her feel like she was getting smaller and smaller and God bigger and bigger. She fell asleep feeling like she was a little child when in reality she was an older woman.

She dreamed of a river than ran through wildernesses and large dirty cities. In her dream she attempted to look at her reflection in the water, but covering the water was layer upon layer of soiled foam. She heard low growls thinking there were wolves nearby but saw people coming out of the cities attacking one another behaving like beasts. There was no kindness or beauty on their faces, but cruelty. Did the water poison the people, or did the people poison the water?

What use is wisdom in the kingdom of beasts? It can’t be heard or understood. There would be no more prophets sent to this place; it would be the end. She suddenly felt her spirit flying upward into light that was filled with love and compassion and there before her stood all of the Prophets weeping.
